Muscatatuck Park Neighborhood Watch Volunteer
Muscatatuck Park is a more than a natural resource; it’s a local treasure. Concerned volunteers have begun a “neighborhood watch” in cooperation with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, North Vernon City Police Department and the park.

Kelly Sabelhaus, United Way’s Day of Caring Chairperson, spearheads the effort. In fact, Sabelhaus has already devoted a considerable amount of late night hours himself. “The county park exists to be used and enjoyed by families, groups and organizations of our community. We hope that by creating a presence, vandals will decide to occupy themselves somewhere else. It is time for concerned citizens to ensure that the beauty and functionality of our park is preserved for all of us to enjoy.” says Sabelhaus.

Volunteers monitor trouble areas of the park and immediately report any suspicious activity or loitering after hours to dispatch. “Citizens that take a proactive approach and report what they see is how we solve the vast majority of our investigations. Extra eyes and ears are of tremendous benefit.”  Chief of Police James Webster confirmed.

The police handle things from there. “Parts of the park can, at times, seem very remote. I would not want anyone to put themselves in harm’s way to report a crime.” cautioned Webster, also a United Way Board member. “We certainly wouldn’t want anyone to try and detain a person that they see committing a crime. A properly timed phone call will be much safer and effective.”

Adult Volunteer's- Invest a little time in keeping our young people safe. It can be an evening, a an hour.. a "swing through" in your daily routine. You can be as involved as you have time for. Just monitor and be visable where our young people are hanging out and at risk, not to hassle them, but to keep them safe. It’s a chance to build relationships! Maybe even find yourself in a position to be a role model or mentor some young people.
